UK Hague:Germans Will Pay For Euro Crisis For Rest Of Their Lives

LONDON (Dow Jones)--U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague said Wednesday that Germans need to accept they will be subsidizing Greece, Italy and Portugal for the rest of their lifetimes due to crisis engulfing the euro zone.

Hague, a former leader of the Conservative Party, said the Greeks, Italians and Portuguese also need to accept "very big changes" to how their countries are run.

"It was folly to create this [euro] system, it will be written about for centuries as a kind of historical monument to collective folly," Hague said in an interview with the Spectator magazine, to be published Thursday. "But it's there and we have to deal with it."

Hague, a long-standing euroskeptic who warned in the late 1990s that the euro was a "burning building with no exits," said he isn't enjoying his moment of vindication, but instead was absorbed in trying to sort out the crisis.

In the interview, which comes days before the Conservative Party's annual meeting in Manchester, the foreign minister describes the party as more euroskeptic than when he lead it 10 years ago and set up the case for the U.K. taking back some control from the European Union.

"The EU does have too much power," he said. "There should be powers that are returned to this country. I think we should be clear in the Conservative Party that that is where we are heading."

This month, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said the U.K. will support a new EU treaty allowing the euro zone to have greater fiscal integration, but only if the U.K.'s interests are protected.

It has been speculated that the U.K. will use the negotiations around a new treaty to push for the repatriation of some powers from Brussels.

Bom, o disparate do Euro é cada vez mais evidente. Mas o que este senhor se esquece de dizer é que os alemães não só ganham com o Euro como ganham por Portugal, Grécia, etc., estarem no Euro.

É que se estes países saíssem de repente do Euro ou mesmo, se nunca tivessem aderido, esta moeda valorizava-se com efeitos perniciosos nas exportações alemãs.

E é este o cerne do problema, o sistema é perverso com ganhadores e perdedores e as instâncias políticas que apostaram tudo no Euro recusam-se a admitir que erraram e tentam lançar as culpas para as populações dos países perdedores. É, por exemplo, o nosso caso...
